By Yossef Ben-Meir, Ph.D<\/em> We are in the midst of a wrenching drought in Morocco.\u00a0 There is ultimately no greater relief than rain.\u00a0\u00a0 There are though actions we can take together to help safeguard\u00a0drinking water<\/a>\u00a0and the survival of the organic fruit trees we planted.<\/p>\n Water conservation basically comes down to containment and efficiency, and empowered local community management.\u00a0 In arid places, we also need to deepen wells.\u00a0 Basins and pipes conserve water by eliminating seepage and enabling us to\u00a0irrigate with better precision<\/a>.\u00a0 They also help to purify the water and reduce water born diseases and infant mortality.\u00a0 Deepening wells by even five meters we can significantly reduce the economic shock of the drought, and stem food insecurity.<\/p>\n The\u00a0High Atlas Foundation<\/a>\u00a0and community partners achieve these water conservation and supply initiatives, and we must do much more.\u00a0 If we can provide only the materials to build efficient water delivery systems, the people will take it from there and contribute all the needed work for installation.\u00a0 Can we meet them halfway?<\/p>\n From struggle can come opportunity, and unity.\u00a0 In Morocco, we are all wishing for the same thing – rain and rain and more.\u00a0 Until then, and as we prepare for the future, we are also unified in our need for water infrastructure in order to best utilize the resources that we do have.\u00a0 Join our shared purpose, and\u00a0help us<\/a>\u00a0implement the common priority of the Moroccan people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" By Yossef Ben-Meir, Ph.D President\u00a0of the High Atlas Foundation We are in the midst of a wrenching drought in Morocco.\u00a0 There is ultimately no greater relief than rain.\u00a0\u00a0 There are though actions we can take together to help safeguard\u00a0drinking water\u00a0and the survival of the organic fruit trees we planted.
