Dakira is dedicated to engaging communities around Morocco in dialogue surrounding Moroccan multiculturalism and conviviality, the collection of memories, histories, and archives, and the mapping of cultural and religious heritage sites.<\/p>\n

The Dakira program has so far engaged about\u00a0150 schools and youth clubs and\u00a01,500 children and youth in heritage learning activities and celebrations in five regions of Morocco.<\/p>\n

Between April and June alone,\u00a096% of students indicated wanting to continue participating\u00a0in\u00a0Dakira club activities<\/a>, and 90.26% reported an increase in their understanding of the Moroccan identity.<\/p>\n

Over the summer, Dakira facilitated cultural and identity exploration activities at a number of summer camps, including in Essaouira and in\u00a0El Menzel<\/a>, in the Sefrou province.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n

Dakira partners are working to enhance the\u00a0soft and technical skills of diverse Moroccan communities to preserve and map their stories and gain and expand job opportunities in the culture and tourism sectors,\u00a0thereby promoting social solidarity and livelihoods.<\/p>\n

For example, Dakira has held cultural workshops with 284 members of women\u2019s cooperatives on identity discovery, cultural heritage, and local craftship, engaging them to discuss the manifestations of local culture in handicrafts, enhancing economic ties, and developing culturally-based education.<\/p>\n

Additionally, last year, 119 tour guides, 147 youth, and 16 Master’s students engaged in courses in Moroccan Jewish heritage and the Hebrew language, an initiative of Association Mimouna in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and L’Institut sup\u00e9rieur international de tourisme de Tanger (ISITT), respectively.<\/p>\n

The Dakira team is\u00a0preparing for a series of trainings to transfer documentation and storytelling skills to community members and civil society organizations (CSOs), beginning in the Souss-Massa and Marrakech-Safi regions.<\/td>\n

The Experience Dakira conference, held June 8-10, 2022 in Marrakech,\u00a0showcased everyday storytellers of Morocco\u2019s pluralistic past, exhibited artistic pathways to community dialogue, highlighted commonalities between religious and ethnic groups, and encouraged reflection on the role of youth and women in heritage sustainability. Testimonials and conversations with Dakira partners and participants prompted exploration of traditional and novel methods of preserving Morocco\u2019s multicultural identity through collective community efforts.<\/p>\n

The main priority attendees expressed focused on the integration of youth in heritage preservation efforts, from providing tailored education for children to building the capacities of young people to train and work in the culture sector. Other top priorities included elevating women as intergenerational gatekeepers of culture and folklore, expressly through oral storytelling and documentation, as well as establishing a radio network dedicated to the dissemination of Moroccan cultural heritage and exchange of ideas and stories across Morocco\u2019s diverse regions and peoples.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

    During the Experience Dakira Conference, a local tour guide takes a group of conference participants throughout the Mellah, or historic Jewish quarter, of Marrakech. The guide had previously participated in classes, along with 177 other guides from various cities, to learn the Hebrew language and about Moroccan Jewish heritage in order to create and deliver Jewish heritage tours. Classes are implemented by Association Mimouna in partnership with the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism as part of Dakira.<\/td>\n\n
