Morocco, El Haouz province: 60 thousand fruit trees to be planted and distributed at Jewish sacred site as part of High Atlas Foundation \u2018One Billion Tree Campaign<\/a>‘.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n At midday on Monday February 9th, 2015 the honorable governor of the province of El Haouz, Mr Youn\u00e8s El Bathaoui, together with local community members and representatives of the Jewish community of Marrakesh-Essaouira, will participate in a very special fruit tree distribution and planting event.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span>30 thousand seeds and saplings are to be planted and the same number of 2-year-old trees \u2013 olive, fig, pomegranate and lemon \u2013 are set to be distributed to local farmers.\u00a0\u00a0The trees have been raised at the\u00a0<\/span>community nursery at Akriach<\/span><\/a><\/span>, just south of Marrakesh, established by the\u00a0High Atlas Foundation (HAF)\u00a0on land that has been lent by the\u00a0Jewish community of Marrakesh-Essaouira.\u00a0\u00a0The nursery is adjacent to the tomb of Rabbi Raphael Hacohen, one of several hundred Jewish sacred sites located throughout Morocco.<\/span><\/p>\n The High Atlas Foundation\u00a0is a Moroccan-US non-governmental organization founded fifteen years ago by former Peace Corps volunteers, including its president, Dr. Yossef Ben-Meir.\u00a0\u00a0A year ago the foundation launched its \u2018One Billion Tree Campaign\u2019 \u2013 a continuation, at an accelerated pace, of its successful project involving a million trees, with the aim of establishing a billion new fruit trees and medicinal plants throughout the Kingdom.\u00a0\u00a0Species planted are indigenous to Morocco; nurseries are managed entirely on organic lines by local communities.<\/p>\n The broader goal is to cease subsistence agricultural practices that trap communities in a cycle of rural poverty and to develop the local and national economy through a variety of initiatives \u2013 from community-managed\u00a0tree nurseries to the deliver of organic product<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0to global markets, cooperative-building, training, and reivestment in human development projects. Additionally, the land management strategies put into place prevent erosion and desertification.<\/p>\n Land is made available by a diverse variety of interested parties including private individuals, national government bodies, municipalities, educational establishments, cooperatives, women\u2019s associations and cultural bodies, one such being the\u00a0Jewish community of Marrakesh-Essaouira, under its president, Mr. Jacky Kadoch. With the successful establishment of the pilot scheme at Akriach, it is hoped that many more of these cultural sites, with their adjoining arable land, will be utilized in the future.\u00a0\u00a0Indeed, the Moroccan Jewish community\u00a0has already dedicated an additional six parcels of terrain in four provinces and is determined to provide more as funding for seeds, water infrastructure and training for the local farmers becomes available.<\/span><\/p>\n Cultural preservation and celebration<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0that leads to sustainable human development<\/span>\u00a0is the twin approach adopted in Morocco and this innovative project, linking Moroccan Muslim farming families and the country\u2019s Jewish community embodies both aims.\u00a0\u00a0In this spirit we welcome your participation and collaboration to make further progress with these two essential goals for the benefit of Moroccan farming families today and for the whole nation, to help enhance its rich cultural heritage in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n HAF\u2019s president\u00a0Dr. Ben-Meir<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0describes further: \u201cThe Kingdom of Morocco could be the only place in Africa and the Middle East where local Muslim and Jewish collaboration \u2013 that helps end rural poverty through the creative use of cultural resources \u2013 is promoted and is taking place.\u00a0\u00a0The upcoming gathering with Governor El Bathaoui and community members is an event that showcases the unifying achievement of the Akriach tree nursery as well as the support available to scale up this human development initiative across the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n En Fran\u00e7ais<\/em><\/p>\n Province d’El Haouz, Maroc: Plantation et distribution de 60 000 arbres fruitiers \u00e0 un site sacr\u00e9 juif dans le cadre de la campagne\u00a0<\/span>‘Un milliard d’arbres’<\/a><\/span>\u00a0de la Fondation du Haut Atlas<\/span><\/p>\n Le lundi 9 f\u00e9vrier 2015, \u00e0 midi, l’honorable gouverneur de la province d’El Haouz, M. Jacky Kadoch. Apr\u00e8s l’\u00e9tablissement r\u00e9ussi du projet pilote \u00e0 Akriach, on esp\u00e8re voir beaucoup plus de ces sites culturels, ainsi que leurs terres arables attenantes, utilis\u00e9s dans le futur.\u00a0 En effet, la communaut\u00e9 juive marocaine a d\u00e9j\u00e0 consacr\u00e9 six parcelles suppl\u00e9mentaires de terrain dans quatre provinces et est d\u00e9termin\u00e9e \u00e0 fournir encore plus de terres au fur et \u00e0 mesure que le financement devient disponible pour les graines, les infrastructures de l’eau et la formation des agriculteurs locaux .<\/span><\/p>\n
