In the picturesque High Atlas Mountains, many rural schools are not equipped with toilets, forcing children to hold it in, or to go in unsanitary conditions. This situation reduces morale and attendance, and creates a negative association for children with their places of learning, especially for girls.

Building school toilets, especially gender-segregated toilets, has a profound impact on school attendance. In a study conducted by HAF in Tassa Ouirgane, the installation of a system for clean water and toilets in schools increased girls enrollment by 16% in less than one year.

The High Atlas Foundation is committed to supporting the growth of strong school communities to empower Morocco’s rural youth. Sanitary environments and the ability to sit comfortably and hydrated throughout the school day will increase school attendance and participation, and decrease risks of diseases carried in human feces and water born illness.

The principle of Laarbidat school, Mr. Aziz Badi says:

“Schools are the second home for our kids, and we want to protect this school. We can do that at least by building toilets and a wall for the school“
