In rural Morocco, women play an integral role in the long-term sustainability of their communities and can potentially contribute up to 50% (3 year period) to the household income through the sale of their handmade crafts. Cooperatives provide alternative incomes to traditional farming as well as educational opportunities for women, which contribute to their improved social and environmental state. HAF works to have these women’s voices heard through organized women’s cooperatives and is currently raising funds to implement a cooperative for 500 Members from 14 High Atlas villages of the Commune of Toubkal that has income generating (Agricultural, value-added, and woven articles) and educational (Training and literacy) activities.  An HAF featured partner is Kantara Crafts, a fair trade company specializing in women’s carpet weaving cooperatives, on the importance of cooperatives, current projects being led in the High Atlas Mountains, and the production-to-sale process of the crafts. Learn about the upcoming Untangling Threads Exhibit which features juxtaposed documentary photographs by Anna Beeke and hand-woven cooperative produces Moroccan rugs imported by Alia Kate of Kantara.
